A MESSAGE FROM THE COMMANDANT OF THE MARINE CORPS
It is with great pleasure that I send greetings and best wishes to the Marines of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment on occasion of your 2002 reunion.
One of our former commandants, General Robert H. Barrow, said, "Success in battle is not a function of how many show up, but who they are." Those words exemplify your ethos of extraordinary teamwork, unity, and sense of purpose. These qualities have enabled you to secure an enduring place in the Corps' legacy of combat valor.
It is on occasions like this that we pause to reflect on our history and to remember those who have paid the ultimate price, giving their lives so we all may continue to enjoy our precious freedom. As our country faces new challenges, it is perhaps all the more appropiate to honor those who are no longer with us. The battlefields of Vietnam tested the mettle of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines. In the violence of that distant and rugged land, and amidst growing turmoil and uncertainty at home, the 3/1 Marines fought hard: first and foremost for each other, but also in defense of the ideals that all Americans hold dear. Some of those who answered that call did not return, yet they linger today in our memories.
Kilo 3/1's operations in the I Corps Tactical Zone, thoughout 1967 and 1968 firmly secures your place in history, just as you have secured the eternal respect and gratitude of the Corps; your actions represent the selfless answer of free men to the obligations of citizenhip and the defense of democracy. As you pause to honor battles past and friends lost, you can take pride in knowing that Kilo Company has established a singular record that all Americans can look upon with pride and admiration. Your selfless service is a testament to the very spirit that makes our country strong. Today's Marines continue in that tradition, guaranteeing freedom's blessing to all Americans and to countless others around the world.
Although I am unable to join you for this special occasion, I want each of you to know that I am deeply proud of my association with 3/1. I thank you for your devoted service and the inspiration you provide to those who are privileged to wear the uniform today. May your reunion be filled with celebration, camaraderie, and remembrance.
Semper Fidelis
