| Comments:No offence to the pit crews and FDC but I didn't want to be in mortars. I was tops at Gieger with a map and compass so I voluntered to be FO not realizing that it had the least life expectancy of any in combat.
My high school trig teacher retired as CO of the Artillery School at Fort Sill. He persuaded them to let me audit the FO course so instead of going home on leave I spent 30 days there before jungle training at Pendelton.
I loved my job and being with the line companies all the time but I hated those towers.
If I ever find the pit crew who was smoking grass and dropped rounds on our CP when we were being attacked, your but is mine even after all these years. The grunts almost killed me. You just can't can't line up those candy canes with blurred vision.
Served with H&S Co 3/1 from 1/66 to10/67, CIA 70/73, Mortars/FO, 0311. |
