| Comments:I landed with Lima 3/1, 1st platoon, in January, 1966, on Operation Double Eagle. Right after the Tet Offensive of '68 I returned as a Sgt. with India Co., 3/27. Though my squad consisted of Marines with non-infantry MOS's--including a guy from motor t, a cook, and a water pump engineer--they evolved into a squared away unit, thus validating the Corps' claim that every Marine is, first and foremost, a rifleman.
In January, 1994, I returned to Vietnam, spending time in Hanoi, Saigon, and the old neighborhood outside Da Nang. It was one of the most emotionally rewarding experiences I have ever had. With the help of the director of a travel service in Da Nang--who served as a liaison officer with the NVA during the war--I had the opportunity to meet a good many of the men we fought against, including a former lt. who fought against us on Operation Utah in March of '66, and several who fought against my second outfit on Operation Allen Brook in May of '68.Served with Lima Co. 3/1 from 10/65 to 11/66, 1st platoon, 0311. |
