Comments: I love your site Oliver. Some people just don't seem to understand what a veteran is all about. If I see an American Flag, I cry. My husband, brothers, nephews, nieces, and uncles, served in several different wars, including Viet Nam. Its really great to see a site dedicated to veterans.Keep up the fight!! Thanks for signing my guestbook .To my fellow West Virginian! Mary

Comments: Oliver, I was VN Feb66-Mar67. I was a Sgt 2511, with HQ BTY, 2/12. Were on a noll over looking the Danang Air Base , when I got there. Then we moved south, to the "Sand Box" or Fort Sand Box , just below Hill 55. We did do day trips to Hill 22. Once we did get out to Hill 37. It wasn't really that bad, while I was there. We would go out on wire lines every day 7-7. Do some patroling around the compound. We'd get shot at every day. But never really could go forward to see if we hit anything. The Col didn't want anyone to get hurt. The Battery moved to Phu Bai 30 days after I left for home. They really got themshelves in trouble there. I just found the Lcpl that took over my section 3 weeks ago. He only lives 15 miles from me. Now we have to get together. Nice site, keep it up John .

Comments: Congratulations on a great webpage and thank you for all of the work you've done on it! I saw a comment in a veteran's website guestbook from a fellow who'd just read that new WWII novel, "THE TRIUMPH AND THE GLORY" and recommended it highly. Always eager to read about military history, I got a copy from barnesandnoble.com and thought it was just terrific, especially the Iwo Jima chapters. The novel offers a fascinating passage through WWII, while telling a stirring story of courage and dedication to doing what is right, no matter what the cost. I was happy to have been told about the book, so I'm passing on the word whenever I visit a military website. But enough about that, my only suggestion for your page is to add more of the kind of stuff you already have. If something isn't broke it doesn't need fixing. Keep up the good work!

Excellent web-site, I personally know Michael Thill/Kilo 3/1,WIA Operation Badger Tooth-12/27/67. Former Sergeant Thill is a man among men,the epitome of a grunt from the "old Corps", who knew how to take care of his people. I'am proud to have served with 1/1, and proud of our sister battalions, 2/1 and 3/1. May the memories of our fallen brothers last forever. Semper Fi!!!

Comments: I am 31 years old, a german soldier, and...i dont know how to start...but i wanted to tell all of u something about my feelings for the USA and how good it is , when u can be proud of your land. Here in Germany it goes like that: if i say: I am proud to be a German, then i am called a Nazi.. and that is really sad....because i am not a Nazi even my Grandpa wasnt one.. i never had a Grandpa he was missing in Action in WW2 even my other Grandpa is missing in Russia. For my whole life i never had someone to talk about the war..what REALLY happens there.. the only thing that i got is the internet i was spending my vacation in texas this year, and for my whole life i was very interessted in the Vietnam war...then i saw the " Moving Wall" so i stopped there...in the middle of the night..there were only 3 members of the Vietnam Veterans of America ,Inc. i was talking with them for hours and hours... This Wall touched me deep inside...sorry ,i dont know why but i started to cry...because i thought i could feel the souls of the soldiers...each name on that wall is not only a name...its a person ,a soldier and most of them were very young... I only wanted to say: its damn good from you, that u do all this for your veterans! In Germany we cant do this.....its a bad thing to talk about that.. That makes me sad, and sometimes angry...but thats the way it is here... Thanks for your attention and forgive me my bad english... Ist good to know that ther is a place on this earth, where the veterans will not be forgotten.. Be proud of your country....and god bless America

I thought your readers might enjoy reading this as much as I did... It's a reminder to all of us that belief in America can carry us all through the hardest of times. Honoring the American Flag -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Condensed from a speech by Leo K. Thorsness, recipient of The Congressional Medal of Honor.

"You've probably seen the bumper sticker somewhere along the road. It depicts an American Flag, accompanied by the words "These colors don't run." I'm always glad to see this, because it reminds me of an incident from my confinement in North Vietnam at the Hao Lo POW Camp, or the "Hanoi Hilton," as it became known. Then a Major in the U.S. Air Force, I had been captured and imprisoned from 1967-1973. Our treatment had been frequently brutal. After three years, however, the beatings and torture became less frequent. During the last year, we were allowed outside most days for a couple of minutes to bathe. We showered by drawing water from a concrete tank with a homemade bucket. One day as we all stood by the tank, stripped of our clothes, a young Naval pilot named Mike Christian found the remnants of a handkerchief in a gutter that ran under the prison wall. Mike managed to sneak the grimy rag into our cell and began fashioning it into a flag. Over time we all loaned him a little soap, and he spent days cleaning the material. We helped by scrounging and stealing bits and pieces of anything he could use. At night, under his mosquito net, Mike worked on the flag. He made red and blue from ground-up roof tiles and tiny amounts of ink and painted the colors onto the cloth with watery rice glue. Using thread from his own blanket and a homemade bamboo needle, he sewed on the stars. Early in the morning a few days later, when the guards were not alert, he whispered loudly from the back of our cell, "Hey gang, look here." He proudly held up this tattered piece of cloth, waving it as if in a breeze. If you used your imagination, you could tell it was supposed to be an American flag. When he raised that smudgy fabric, we automatically stood straight and saluted, our chests puffing out, and more than a few eyes had tears. About once a week the guards would strip us, run us outside and go through our clothing. During one of those shakedowns, they found Mike's flag. We all knew what would happen. That night they came for him. Night interrogations were always the worst. They opened the cell door and pulled Mike out. We could hear the beginning of the torture before they even had him in the torture cell. They beat him most of the night. About daylight they pushed what was left of him back through the cell door. He was badly broken; even his voice was gone. Within two weeks, despite the danger, Mike scrounged another piece of cloth and began another flag. The Stars and Stripes, our national symbol, was worth the sacrifice to him. Now whenever I see the flag, I think of Mike and the morning he first waved that tattered emblem of a nation. It was then, thousands of miles from home in a lonely prison cell, that he showed us what it is to be truly free."

Thank you Oliver for this wonderful webpage and I will pass it along to all my cyber friends... God Bless America ... Jim

Comments: To Randy Cook Re: Maps What fools are we who depend on memory to give information. You can obtain maps from either the Library of Congress (LC) Geography & Map Division or the U.S. Coast & Geodedic Survey (USGS). I think the maps you are looking for are Series TL7014, Map numbers 6640-IV ( south of Da Nang), 6540-I (southwest of Da Nang), 6640-I (south of Da Nang coastal area) and possibly 6641-III (Da Nang). I think hill 37 & 55 are on map # 6540-I. You can call LC at 1-202-707-6277 or the USGS at1-800-435-7627. I would try USGS first. Happy hunting!!! Doc.

Comments: A success story!!! I served in Viet Nam 69/70 with "A" 1/5,however my best friend in high school, Earl Lewis, was KIA in December 1967. After all of these years I wanted to know what had actually happened. I posted a message on USMC Lost and Found and immedietly received 2 replies. One from Michael, whose memory of Badgertooth is on this site and then another. I lost the E-mail from the second person before I could contact him. For some unknown reason I woke at 2:00 am and checked this site. I was just going to sign the guest book but I viewed a couple of pages and there was the name and phone number of Bud Eckert, the person whose mail I had lost.I will call him later today but I wanted you to know that you can get good info out there on the Web. Thanks for this site.

Comments: To Randy Cook re: Maps. I tried to reach you via your e-mail address but was unable to make contact. You can buy topo maps from the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS) in Washington D.C.. These are the same maps we used while in the bush. I purchased some several months ago and they cost about $6 each plus shipping. The USGS does accept telephone orders with a credit card, however, you need to know the specific map number. They limit phone orders to 4 or 5 maps. More than that you need to request an order blank and do it by mail. I will follow this with the phone number and map numbers for some of the areas you requested. Or you can contact me through Oliver's guest page by clicking on my name and sending me an e-mail.
